Punch Fear in the Face — Start. Giveaway

May 22, 2013 By the Goble Group Leave a Comment

Start

Start. by Jon Acuff is now a New York Times bestseller. It’s a simple little book (in a good way!) that illuminates the road to awesome, helping make the walk down the road to awesome less scary.

The road to awesome is the road less traveled, because it’s not always the easiest road to go down. But the road to awesome is worth it!

So many people thought the book was great, they bought them all from Amazon and you currently can’t buy it…yeah, it’s that good.  That’s why I’m giving a copy of it away for free.

Two things need to happen to be entered to win:

1. Leave a comment below about what new project or experience you want to Start.

2. Share this post via one of the buttons below.

That’s it!  This giveaway will last until May 31st.  I’ll draw the winner on June 1st, make a note about who that is in the comment section and other social media places, then put it in the mail.  Simple.

Punch fear in the face. Escape Average. Do work that matters.  Good luck!

‘TED Talk Thursday’ is going to be a new, ongoing post. As there are many great TED Talks that deserve to be shared, I’m going to do my best to provide those to you, while sharing my insight about the videos and why I think they’re important. If you’re not familiar with TED Conferences, go here to learn more.  See you every Thursday!

This TED talk by Malcolm Gladwell — Choice, Happiness & Spaghetti Sauce — introduced me to the eccentricity of the author and his penchant for studying the absurd or over-looked.

Like in his best-selling books, The Tipping Point, Blink, & Outliers, Gladwell makes his audience think about the (not-so) random of items in a new light…in this case spaghetti sauce.

But his talk is much deeper than spaghetti sauce, and leaves the viewer thinking more deeply about the power of choices as they relate to our overall happiness, and our own ability to tell others what makes us happy.

How many times have you started something, yet for whatever reason, you didn’t finish it?  A home project?  That weight loss plan? That side project you were once so passionate about?

If I’m honest with myself, I’ve started a number of things I haven’t finished that are worthy of being finished.  I’ve started. Stopped. And then Started again. Sometimes I’ve had to Start again and again.

Why?  Because I’ve stopped on more than one occasion.

I recognized a while ago the importance of posting regularly here, but I let excuses get in the way from investing the time it takes to keep the content fresh and relevant.

  • Nobody was reading.
  • I have to finish this project or that project.
  • The fear of trying to be ‘perfect’.

Why am I writing about this now and rededicating my time to invest in this platform?

My wife & I had the awesome opportunity to celebrate the launch of ‘START.‘ in NYC last night.  ‘START.‘ is the new book from Jon Acuff that is meant to kick you in the butt and keep you moving on the road to awesome!

Through this book, Jon shares the failures & successes he’s had on his journey,  he wants us to Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work that Matters, and he wants you (and me!) to come along.

One thing that I recently came to understand was that I need to quit trying to be perfect, it’s not going to happen.

I’m not going to be perfect..and that’s OK!

It’s OK for you not to be perfect.  But it’s no longer OK not to START.

What are you going to START today?

Who Said Quitting Has to be Bad

August 28, 2012 By the Goble Group 4 Comments

I do a lot of reading and recently finished the book ‘Quitter’ by Jon Acuff.  It’s a great book for those currently employed in a job maybe they don’t hate, but don’t necessarily love either. They have a dream inside them just waiting to be fulfilled, and reading ‘Quitter’ will hopefully spark the ignition in them to get them focusing on fulfilling that dream.

But it didn’t really apply directly to me. You see, at the moment I’m building my dream job.  From scratch.

I didn’t come willingly at first; I was kicked into it by getting fired when my daughter was 12 days old.  I always knew I was going to be my own boss someday, but it wasn’t in my goals to have the journey  begin when I was learning how to be a dad.

When my wife and I discussed having children, we decided she would be a stay at home mom.  For us, being parents is the most important job we have.  We created our budget based on one income and lived within our means.  All that went down the tubes when I was fired in the fall of 2010 during one of the worst economic environments.  I learned some hard lessons along the way, some more painful than others, but all of them valuable.

Reflecting on the book and the notes I took got me thinking:  What about those unemployed or underemployed?

I’m willing to bet there are many others out there who this book doesn’t apply to…yet. If you’re one of those people, here are a few lessons I believe will help you become a future ‘Quitter’.

1>     Spend some time today and write down your goals for the next week, the next month, the next 6 months, and the next year.  I recommend you only have about 3 or 4 for each, so they need to be super focused and meaningful.  Share them with loved ones, get them involved. Set these goals aside for a day or two and think about them. Revisit after you’ve had some time to reflect on them and change or redefine as needed. Remember, true goals have deadlines. Put some teeth into these, it will only benefit you and your dream.

2>     Go minimalist on your expenses and only keep those that you feel are important and that fuel your dream.  Get your spouse involved and talk about what is really important.  Health Insurance, especially with a 12 day old…important.  Cable…not important.  By going minimalist, you’ll identify financial roadblocks to your dream and eliminate them while simultaneously tightening your budget.  You’ll also find a bunch of new time to invest in yourself and your dream.

3>     Don’t mistake busyness for accomplishment.  There are many people out there who are busy all the time, but don’t seem to accomplish anything worthwhile.  Prioritize your goals and activities, and make sure that they’re accomplishing something that gets you closer to your dream, without sacrificing time with your family.  Results are still the name of the game, now you just have to answer to yourself and/or a spouse.

4>     Go find a job and fall in ‘like’ with it.  As Jon says in the book, “…get control of your finances if you really want the freedom to pursue your dream well.” Can’t stress this part enough. Most dreams fail not because of bad ideas, bad planning, or even bad execution.  They fail because of lack in money.  Money isn’t the most important thing in life, but you can’t pay the electric bill with your dream, they expect cash.

5>     With your first paycheck, go buy ‘Quitter’ and read it!  Or you could totally cheat and buy the book right now.  Either way, don’t let it sit on your coffee table, your kitchen counter, or become one of those books you always meant to read. Osmosis doesn’t work just by having the book in your house. Invest in yourself and your dream.

If you’re not willing to invest in your dream with time and money, why should anybody else invest you?

Through the development of my business, I’m still building my dream. I know it’s going to take time and commitment.  I’ve made many mistakes and have learned the lessons above – the hard way.

If you’ve recently been laid off or fired, or if it’s been that way for a while, I hope this encourages you to start taking action. Employ the steps above and go fall in ‘like’ with a job that lets you build your dream job!

When you begin chasing your dream, I promise you it won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.

What is the dream you’ve always wanted to chase?

6 Month Gut Check

July 4, 2012 By the Goble Group 2 Comments

It’s July.  We’re half-way through the calendar year.  Time for a gut check on the goals you started 2012 with.

Where do you stand on those goals?  Are you still trying to achieve them?  Do you need a new goal to keep you challenged for the rest of the year?

When I started 2012, one of my goals was to read a book a week.  That would give me a total of 52 books for the year.  Thought that was pretty good.

But I wasn’t doing well in accomplishing this goal, I let excuses pop up everywhere.  I was coaching lacrosse.  I was dealing with health issues with our daughter.  I was trying to build a business.

Not counting all the books I’ve read over and over to my daughter, (I might’ve read this book to my daughter 20 times by itself…that would be great if I could count it towards my goal!) I completed about 8 books in 6 months.  Not bad for most people who don’t pick up a book unless they’re forced too.  But I’m not happy with being compared to most people.

Then I discovered Claire Diaz-Ortiz.  Her reading habits put me and my puny goal to shame.

But it also reinvigorated me to get back on track with a better plan and less excuses…lacrosse season is over, and thank God, my daughter is healthy now!

So here’s my new goal for the rest of the year:  Read two books a week for the rest of the year.  26 weeks, 2 books…52 books!  And I’ve already finished ‘Love Works’ by Joel Manby, highly recommend it!

I’ve divided the books into 7 categories that I know I need to grow in: Leadership, Faith, Innovation, Marketing/Sales, Economics/Business, Fatherhood, People.  I also threw in a ‘Miscellaneous’ category as I’m not quite sure where those books fit, one of the reasons I want to read them!

Here’s the list I’m going to be choosing from.  There’s more than 52 so if I come across a book I really don’t want to finish, I can simply put it down and move on. (I’ve also linked up with SarahMae and others sharing our reading lists…go say hello)

So I’ll still be accomplishing my original goal, just in a different capacity than I originally thought.  I’m OK with that.

And since I’ve talked about my daughter, isn’t she cute  ;-)

What goals did you start the year with that you need to revisit?  What books might you read over the next 6 months?
