This talk by Seth Godin, ‘The Tribes We Lead’, was one of the first TED Talks I ever saw. At the time I had just gotten into coaching and developing my own leadership skills, and it helped energize me in my thinking that I was on the right path, that the status quo was no longer acceptable.

If you’re in an environment where you sometimes might feel you’re up against the wall or stuck in a no win situation, invest your time and watch this talk.

If you want to create a movement around something you’re passionate about, invest your time and watch this talk.

If you’re looking for a movement to join that will have a lasting impact on humanity, invest your time and watch this talk.  Then go join a Rotary Club and help eradicate polio from our world.

Don’t wait for others to invite you to join their tribe, create your own.  And remember, if you’re not upsetting anyone, you’re not changing the status quo.

This talk by Dan Pallotta – The Way We Think About Charity Is Dead Wrong – is a condensed version of a talk that he delivered when hosted by the Lancaster Community Foundation in Nov. 2011 as part of their ‘Ah-Ha Project‘.

I was in the audience when he spoke here in Lancaster and it was an eye opening experience to look at the institution of charity through a completely different lens.

As I’ve gotten more involved in local & international non-profits/community benefit organizations (CBO) since I first heard Dan speak, I was excited to discover this video from a talk Dan gave earlier this year.  Listening again has me thinking about how the CBO’s I’m working with can fight through the noise to produce results and outcomes that truly change the world.

The only true difference between a ‘for profit’ and a ‘non-profit’ is how they do their taxes.

TED Talk Thursday – Sir Ken Robinson

TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

_______________________________________________________________

My wife & I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter named Dani.  We are starting to discuss the potential educational opportunities that we need to be aware of when she gets older.

One thing for sure is that we’re already starting to teach her at home.  It’s truly a blessing that my wife can be a stay at home mom. She’s doing a phenomenal job teaching our daughter and I love reading to Dani or helping her count after work. But what will become of things in the future as the education landscape changes, as might our family situation?

Do we try to home school?  Start her out in a private Christian school to lay a stronger foundation (assuming we can afford it…not sure we’ll be able to) and then move her to public school? Send her off to public kindergarten and pray for the best?

For parents of young children or maybe even grandparents who are also facing difficult education choices in the near future, I want to introduce to you this TED talk from Sir Ken Robinson.

In it, Robinson talks about ‘Changing the Paradigm’ of education and our understanding of the current educational system and how it might affect the future generations and global economy in a larger scale.

Sir Ken Robinson has written several highly acclaimed books, including the brand new ‘Finding Your Element: How to Discover Your Talents and Passions and Transform Your Life‘, which is the follow up to ‘The Element’.

*Note: This is not a typical TED Talk in that it’s an animation of a TED Talk…still all good!

Be Brave

February 25, 2013 By the Goble Group Leave a Comment

When I was young, people often asked ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?‘.  With great enthusiasm, I used to say baseball player, policeman, or Marine sniper.   I was very eager to share everything I wanted to be.

I was brave, and I’m willing to bet, so were you.

A lot of people were asked this question growing up, and one thing I’ve never heard anybody say they wanted to be when they grew up was ‘afraid’.  Yet now, so many people live their lives that way.  They live afraid.

Afraid to try something new.

Afraid to leave the job they hate.

Afraid to ask for the date with that girl or guy.

Afraid to get out of their comfort zone.

What happened to us as we grew older that we began living life afraid?

People, usually those we looked up to or were older, began telling us that ‘you can’t do that’ or they began questioning why we would want to do something.  For many, we lost our ability to be brave in our own lives, and we began worrying about what others thought.

Fear is powerful. Fear keeps people from living the life they truly want to live.

Too many people are doing something they hate because they’re afraid to fail, afraid to be rejected by their peers, or afraid they’ll be alone.

I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to be afraid.

Below is a video I submitted to be considered as a speaker at the Dare Conference in London Sept. 2013.  Don’t know if you can tell, but I was scared, and it took me a while to start.

Not sure if I’ll be accepted to speak, but I know I gave it my best.  And now I’m not so afraid.

You can be brave, but you have to take that first step.

The other day I tweeted:

If you don’t love what you do, find something that you do love, and go do that.

If you’re not doing something you love because you’re afraid, the only way to overcome that fear is to face it.

Go, be brave!

What is one way you can be brave today?

Update:  Didn’t get selected to speak at the Dare Conference.  They did give me some great feedback that I can apply for future proposals though!  And I learned quite a bit in the process as well.

The Drip

February 19, 2013 By the Goble Group 2 Comments

You know that sound the water makes when it comes slowly out of the faucet, into the sink below.

That’s the drip.

It’s annoying and frustrating, but more often than not, it doesn’t bother us enough so we take action.

We let the drip continue.

Drip.

Drip.

Finally, we’re forced to address the drip.  Only then do we discover that what started as a small drip, has now turned into a flooded kitchen.

__________________________________________

I’ve had some drips in my life lately:

My health is something that has frustrated me over the last year and concerns my wife. With her experience of losing her father at a young age, she looks at health and life from a different perspective than I do, yet I need to recognize her perspective and no longer ignore that drip. If not just for her, I need to address this for me.

My writing has been non-existent for almost 6 months, yet it’s something I love to do and believe is a way for me to add value to others.  I didn’t intend my last blog post about being a ‘Quitter’ to be so literal, but I let the drip get away from me.  It’s often that easy to be detrimental to yourself.

My business is continuing to grow, but at a much slower pace that I anticipated, even as I come close to celebrating my 2nd Anniversary.  I’m determined to make ‘the Goble Group’ successful, but I’ve struggled with being a small business owner, a husband, and a father, all at the same time.  Working from home most of the time, it’s hard telling my adorable daughter Dani that daddy can’t play with her at 11am.  Yet, I need to tell her ‘no’.

It’s time for me to seriously address my drips, or I will become flooded by them, and the consequences of being flooded aren’t something I’m eager to deal with.

__________________________________________

Acknowledging the drips in your life is the first start.  Once they’re acknowledged, it’s easier to address them before they flood you with consequences that will take more work, frustration, and effort.  Let’s help each other address our drips and see how much more successful we can become.

We can thank ourselves later!

What ‘Drips’ do you have in your life?  How can we work together to overcome them and achieve the success we’re looking for?
